I just finished a top with blocks set on the diagonal. I didn't know how to measure for setting triangles, so I googled setting triangles and came up with this exact formula. It works perfectly.

One thing I have found to be very necessary. MAKE THEM BIGGER. After they are sewn onto the rows and the rows sewn together, I put my ruler on the tips of two of the blocks and cut 1/4 inch away from that for the seam allowance. Sometimes it pays to leave more than 1/4 inch and make the blocks "float".

I agree make triangles bigger so you can trim down to correct size.
