Yes I used to do the same thing. Now I always use the 2 pin method

I haven't done that turning yet, but I did just rip the quilting out of a sofa cover TWICE

I do the same - place 2 pins at each side of the opening - one in each direction. That way I will not sew past it.

I do the same, but I use very small binder clips because they don't catch on things, including me. I are a klutz. Lol!

what great tips! Must file these away in the deep dark cobwebby spaces of my mind where I'll hopefully remember to use them.
