I have only made a quilt that way the first time. I guess that I was not very good at it because it did not turn out well. Gave it to my sister for Christmas, and she loved it.

I use the yellow glass head pins for nearly all my sewing. But I've saved a few other colors over the years. Now when I pin something together where I want to leave an opening, I put a green headed pin where I want to start sewing and a red headed pin where I want to stop.

i've done some birthing quilts and i put duck tape with safety pins for opening start in middle sew going to corners till you back to other side with tape and pin when just turn it inside out remove tape and pin close by hand or machine worked for me hope is helps
