Question How many yards will I need?

Hi friends! I am at it again and have no idea of how much fabric to purchase. I'm going to make a queen size, disappearing 9 patch quilt. I plan on the blocks to measure 12" when finished and know I need 56 blocks. My question is how many yards of each fabric will I need? I have some basic math knowledge but am lost trying to figure this out. Thank you all for being so helpful!

For starters - what are the approximate finished size dimensions of the quilt you are making.

If you are planning on a 7 blocks across and 8 blocks down arrangement, that will be approximately 84 x 96.

Are you planning to add borders?

What size square are you starting with? I'm having trouble trying to figure out if the 12" finished refers to the 9-patch before it is cut, or to the cut pieces from the 9-patch. Do you plan on the plain squares being all the same fabric? Are the colored squares going to be all the same fabrics, or is it scrappy? All of these things affect yardage.

This one has pieces that are larger than you specify, but provides yardage. If your pieces are smaller, you would need more yardage. She specifies 40 layer cakes for the colors, which translates into about 3 yards if you cut your own.

The layer cake one also calls for 2 1/3 yards of background fabric.

I have played with this in EQ7, and there are a lot of variables. For instance, how many colours/fabrics do you plan to use, sashing, border? - so I have catered for 3, and a separate colour for borders and sashings.

With no sashing - blue - 3 5/8 yds - or multiple other coloured fabrics
Red - 1 1/8 "
White - 4 yds
Binding - ½ yd

If you put a border on as well, you might need 1 1/2yds extra.
Hope I have helped some.

Sorry for the size of photos, couldn't change them.

Nicely done Gay. If you want a 12" block, you need to cut 8.5" squares. I don't pre-wash so I can cut 5 squares in a 8.5" strip. You need to decide if you want borders or not.

Wouldn't that be 4.67 inches per block? 4.67 times three blocks across is 14. inches squared. Then you subtract 1.5 inches for the three seam allowances going across, leaving 12.5 inches, unfinished. 4.67 seams difficult to cut to me. As long as it isn't in a block exchange where there would be a specific size requirement, I would just use 5 inch blocks and let the finished block be whatever size it turns out as. You are making all the blocks so they should all go together evenly.

Gay - don't you just love EQ?!!!! And I really, like the fabrics you chose for the example. It shows that just 3 fabrics can make a beautiful quilt. I have a tendency to start with 5" charm-size squares - I have a Go! die and so does my quilt guild so they are easy to cut, but any size will do - just don't go below 4" or so or you'll be making lots and lots of squares!! If someone wants multiple fabrics you can just take the amount for say the blue - divide into, how many fabrics you want to use and then get that amount (of course adding more for a "just in case or oops" or for your stash. More is always better😄😄😄😄
