How often do you square up?

Whenever possible, I always make my blocks a bit bigger and trim down. I can even do that with a 9 patch block but one has to be very careful to do everything in sequence. I learned this technique from EB of QIAD. I was just so tired of my blocks being off just a smidgen.

I square up/sliver cut throughout the block building process. It leads me to easier squaring up at the end of the process. For the 28 log cabin blocks I just did, that meant squaring every second log. And yes, it is time consuming, and probably my least favorite part of piecing.

I too square up throughout the block - especially if there are points involved. The only time I do not do that is Paper piecing or the block will be framed. I am pretty good at piecing but have found that two slight errors in the same spot can be disastrous for me.

I sometimes make all the blocks and if they are supposed to end up as 12 1/2 inches I will wait to get them all sewn and then hopefully trim them to size. Sometimes for whatever reason I will have the odd block that is already a little smaller than that so I'll trim to that size. I don't think it matter when you do it as long as you get the results you want.

I know some people that almost never square up blocks and others that meticulously square up every block & section etc. I usually make my block slightly bigger then trim down to size so as not to lose fabric in the process or they seem to sometimes come out too small.
I wonder what the overall consensus is on this?

I will cut HST units larger and trim to size.
I will cut borders a bit longer than pattern says and trim to size.
Other than that, I usually get fairly close to what I am trying for.
When sandwiching the quilt, I go to great lengths to get it as "true" as possible. I have a 16.5 inch ruler square that I use for the corners and bring out all the long rulers (4 foot is my longest one) to make sure that the borders are straight.
