When do you machine quilt a top that has been birthed? From what I am reading, after the piece is turned right side out, you sew 1/4" or 1/2" around the edges....will I be able to pin baste Or thread baste? I imagine it won't lay flat enough without basting to quilt without puckers? Glad this project is a runner, and not a large quilt!

I trim the batting back so it doesn't get caught in the seam forming a thickness. This is when I use the basting spray to make sure the batting doesn't shift along the edges. I use masking tape to get it to lay flat and then use pins so the sandwich doesn't shift. I stitch around the outside at about an 1/8". These placemats were all birthed.
