OK, here is how I would start
Those four big solid blocks would get a motif of some sort, maybe a large star or compass. The sides would get a rope or chain pattern, and the smaller solid blocks would get smaller stars. Then the printed pieces would get some stippling perhaps.

Those are all great ideas and I so wish I was that good at FMQ...hahaha.

If you're not quite ready for FMQ, here's an option that uses a lot of vertical and horizontal lines. Simple curved motifs in the blocks around the center, and then in the inner border a simple curved swirl and the outer border could be funky feathers, bead border or crosshatch. Sorry for the pic - it's really hard to draw with a mouse.

Thank you for not only the ideas, but the picture. Not sure how to do that on my computer, but I'm going to figure it out. What a good way to come up with how you want to quilt!!!

Beautiful Carpenter's Star - the colors you used are gorgeous.
I also have a Carpenter's Star but have been stalled to finish for lack of imagination for quilting. Thanks for all the ideas.
BTW - please post pics of your finished quilt!
