How to quilt a Carpenter's Star?

OK, here is how I would start
Those four big solid blocks would get a motif of some sort, maybe a large star or compass. The sides would get a rope or chain pattern, and the smaller solid blocks would get smaller stars. Then the printed pieces would get some stippling perhaps.

If you're not quite ready for FMQ, here's an option that uses a lot of vertical and horizontal lines. Simple curved motifs in the blocks around the center, and then in the inner border a simple curved swirl and the outer border could be funky feathers, bead border or crosshatch. Sorry for the pic - it's really hard to draw with a mouse.

Beautiful Carpenter's Star - the colors you used are gorgeous.
I also have a Carpenter's Star but have been stalled to finish for lack of imagination for quilting. Thanks for all the ideas.
BTW - please post pics of your finished quilt!
