I mean, small wall hangings? table runners? pot holders? place mats? small couch throws that aren't really big enough to cover a person? Just because they are quilted handcrafts, are they "quilts" or do we call them something else? Just wondering.

If it's smaller than a baby or lap size, I usually call it what it is . . . "wall hanging", etc. Maybe "quilted wall hanging"...

I have some minatures that I still call quilts. I call my doll quilts quilts too. On regular size patterns, anything big enough to use as a "person cover" is called a quilt. If it's not to cover a person, I call it "quilted" for wallhanging, tablerunner, table topper, mug rug, etc.

I think work is work.. pot holder quilted, for barbie doll or larger doll. Here are guide lines I found from NQA. Unless your piece is for judging.. Be proud! Enjoy! and do one project at a time and be happy you finished it what size you want.

•Isn't any small quilt considered a miniature? The answer to this question is no. A miniature quilt is a design that has been reduced in scale. Simply because a quilt is the size required for the category does not make the quilt a miniature. All of the various quilt components — the overall design, quilting design and stitches, binding, embroidery or other surface techniques, or embellishments need to be reduced in scale.

they can be pretty small.... at the quilt museum in paducah, they displayed many gorgeous mini quilts. so if they can call them quilts, i guess we can too :)

I tend to think of a quilt (as opposed to a quilted whatever) as being big enough to wrap around or cover someone or something...ie baby quilt, lap quilt, bed quilt, dog quilt, doll quilt.

A quilted tote, quilted placemat, quilted coasters, quilted wallhanging, quilted toy, quilted tablerunner, quilted jacket, quilted hat, etc. are items that use the quilting technique in construction.

They are as much a part of the quilting family as a regular quilt, but they also may require some additional or different methods of completion.

If they are entered in a quilt show they are usually in separate categories from other quilts, which may also have several different categories.

If it's got three layers sewn together it's a "quilt" - no matter what size. Now you can call it a mini, a runner, a wall hanging, or whatever, but it's still a quilt. IF however, you look only at the usefulness of the object, then ONLY those that are used for covering should be called quilt which includes knee throws and doll quilts but no wall hangings. Isn't it fun to make up your own rules?

A agree. To me "a quilt" is the process of the creation, not the size. I have a quilt that's a pin for my lapel.
