A week ago, my DH called me while I was sewing christmas banners at my church. The conversation went something like this:

DH: Your Mom called. You should call her. She wants to ask you something.

ME: What does she need? Who died?

DH: Now, think about this very carefully ... if you say yes, it means you've got to be prepared to feed it ....

ME: Feed what?

DH: Your mother wants to know if you'd like her sewing machine. If you don't take it, it goes to the Goodwill tomorrow. Now, THINK VERY CAREFULLY before you answer ... you know that another mouth to feed means you need more fabric to feed it.....

ME: Are you serious? OF COURSE I WANT THAT MACHINE! [realize that this is an OLD Necchi (oh, circa 1952 or so), in a lovely cabinet, with a knee control, and the machine I used all through high school]. I'm glad she thought to ask me since she's thrown out so much stuff without asking me if I would even like it. And, by the way, dear, I think my stash can handle ANOTHER machine at our house (this should make 6, I think).

So, my question is this: a) how would you respond? and b) how can I make my 17-year-old daughter (who's a senior in high school) move away NOW so I can have her room to sew in?????  :-D

I would say yes! That is how I would respond and also let your husband know that it eats about 5-6 yards per week.
As for the teenager, I think most would agree that they are ready to be out on their own way before 17. They tell us from about age 15 on that they cannot wait to move out. I am sure she would consider it a lovely christmas gift if you asked her to move out. LOL!

Oh Thankyou, Odessaquilts!!! So glad to know I am not the only one coveting a larger room. I am quietly biding my time until my step-daughter heads to college next fall. I am then taking over her BR for my sewing room. It is about twice the size I have now. So...lets have a wee cuppa while we bide our time for the gals to leave, shall we? :D

LOL feeding one more "mouth" is not that hard.. everyone learns to adjust just make sure you dont insult the other one first or it will go on the blitz just to irk you grandly.

The daughter? absolutely, just a fine looking hunk and your history which is good. HOWEVER I know from experience.. they are like darned boomerangs. No matter how far we toss them they come back .. again and again.. and I say this as we are packing to move. There is a pile about 6 feet sq of my daughters things.. that somehow migrate over here all the time. And she will pout that I want them to migrate back home so I dont have to move them. Watch.. they are like the kids.. they will fly back to my new place too.

Oh yeah, I agree!! Send her to live with Grandma -- it's probably been long enough that Grandma doesn't exactly remember how it was to have a TEENAGE DAUGHTER in the house

Actually, it would be excellent to send her to live with the grandparents, but they already know from firsthand experience what having a teenager in the house is like: my sister and her husband used to live next door. But he got a promotion which meant moving north about 90 minutes away. But my sister put her foot down and said their daughter would not have to change schools until she graduated about 2 years later. She is 6 weeks younger than my daughter and is also a senior in high school.

So sis and niece live with mom & dad during the week, commuting up north on the weekends. Found out Christmas Eve that the hair hanging in her eyes drives my dad nuts (still! I remember that argument from my own teenage years). She will actually look at him and say, "Grandpa?" while she is combing her hair down the front of her face. Smiling the whole time, of course, because she knows it pushes his buttons. And, of course, he just shakes his head and says, "If your great-grandpa were alive, he'd scalp you bald for that little trick!"

Not that they don't love and dote on their grandchildren, but at their ages, I would not want to burden my parents with my child .... she's definitely a moody handful. I really do HATE 17 -- it's my third time at this rodeo and I'm glad I don't have to live through it again.

As for shipping her off to live with a boyfriend, I'm not too sure she's ready for that.... SHE thinks she is, of course, but my experience knows better!

wow- I wish my mom would call and ask me that question (it'd be an embroidery machine though) - - - - as for the daughter leaving - before you know it she'll be gone - with three kids now on their own (two left at home) I'm thinking the 'empty nest syndrome' is a false thing - The boys could be 18 and out tomorrow - I'm afraid I'd REALLY like going for visits to THEIR home ;)
