I recently purchased a pattern for a lovely beach scene applique wall hanging. The problem is there are a lot of very small pieces to applique. Do these small pieces need to be sewn or can I just use the fusable webbing? Hope this makes sense.

I would sew them all down as the fusible it not strong enough to hold them there permanently. It's a pain but it will be worth it in the end.

What do the instructions with the pattern say?

I do mostly needleturn, but if you have lots of small pieces maybe fusible would be better. You can always sew around them using a small zigzag.

if the quilt is to be used as a quilt- and laundered the pieces need to be stitched- if the piece will be a wall hanging with no chance of being laundered you can use a more permenent no-sew fusable.

I would sew them or they may start to peel off. When washed some could come off.

try fusing the small pieces onto the other pieces that go with them, before you attach them to the background. Then you might be able to stitch the whole sections down at once and not have to just stitch one tiny piece at a time.

I have used clear monofilament thread on very tiny appliqué to hold them down and then if the stitches have to cross over another color it's not noticeable.
