Another newbie question  When putting the quilt together, which comes first - marking the quilting or basting the layers together?

I bast first then mark in sections that I'm going to quilt at that time.

if you're using a design that you have to trace, like with a light box you should do it first because you wouldn't be able to see thru the whole thing. If you have templates to trace around it shouldn't matter but it may be a bit easier without the padding.

I draw thn baste also.
The batting makes the tracing uneven if I do the basting first

If you are talking about marking the quilt lines, I eye it, if it's just the 1/4 line. I used to use the thin tape but occasionally I'd stick my needle through it and it gummed up the needle. If I'm using a stencil I usually do that before I basted the layers together because it will lay flatter and is easier to mark that way. I always use the markers that disappear with water for lighter fabrics or the white pencils for darker fabrics. Pencil lines don't go away. Hope this helped.
