Not wanting to "waste" anything I decided to make burp cloths to practice FMQ. I figured the babies would not care how the quilting was when they were spitting up on these cloths. Probably the parents will not either.
So I prepared everything, had a bit of trouble getting the tension correct but finally did. And I actually quilted! My question is, it seems I am sewing sideway some of the time, like doing loops. Is this okay???? These cloths are flannel, backed with flannel and the batting is flannel. So three layers of flannel.

FMQ means "Free Motion Quilting", which includes sideways, backwards, frontwards, etc. So yes, it's OK to be sewing sideways.

Oh I am far from mastering it but I was happy just to make a couple of loops. I certainly understand everyone's advice on practice, practice, practice.
