The only thimble I can use is the little leather circles that have glue on them so they stick to your finger. You can put them wherever you need it and it stays put. I often forget I have it on and go to wash my hands to fix dinner and find it there. Then I stick it on the frame of my glasses so I don't lose it. You can use it several times before the sticky wears off. They cost about $5 for 12 of them.

I have leather thimbles that fit all fingers but usually only use one at a time, also the kids like to use them.
After stitches on one of my fingers I found he touch of a needle on that scar still sends a sharp pain through myhand. The leather thimbles are the pefect protection.

The thimble from Connecting Threads is the best alternative for me. It's comfortable, adjustable, and not cumbersome/bothersome.

Clover maskes a really nice thimble that is the only one I have ever been able to use comfortably. It has a "rubbery" part that fits over your finger, and a metal tip for pushing the needle. They are color coded for your size. A little more than the metal thimbles, but works great! I can now comfortably sew for hours, and my finger is not sore anymore. Love it!

The only ones I can stand to wear are the leather ones with the metal insert. After awhile they "form" to the shape of my finger. They come in sizes. I always have two at hand, I would panic if I lost them.

The only time I used a thimble was in highschool only because our teacher insisted upon it. I have been sewing over 60 years and to this day I do not use a thimble. Whenever I tried to use one, I would push the needle with the finger next to it.
