I have a new baby ...
#24
I have the Bernina 1090 that is my workhorse. I have two other Berninas as well.
However, I bought the Bernina 580 in December. The first week, the motor started clacking. Then the bobbin case had a problem. Then it started making a whishing sound. Then the thread sensors needed adjusting. Then it would not center the needle. Then I traded it in on a Babylock Journey. A lot more expensive, but well worth the cost.
A lot of the people I talked to along the way said that having to go through all the screens in the newer Berninas to get to the function you want is tedious if not just plain aggravating. Also, they are a pretty sensitive machine. Everything has to be just right for it to stitch well. I will say that I love the Bernina's stitch better than the Babylock, but the Babylock is much more user friendly. People either seem to love the newer Berninas or hate them. I didn't hate this machine, I just found it too annoying to put up with. I don't think my experience is common, and the dealer was very helpful and supportive. I look forward to seeing you photos of quilts you've created on your new Bernina!
I think the problem with a lot of the newer machine is that they are trying to incorporate computer technology with the mechanical operations of sewing. Sometimes they just don't do it very well.
