I was planning quilts for Christmas and got to thinking...I was going to make a quilt for my wonderful father in law. But then it occurred to me that he's not really a "quilty" kind of guy...he's just not the type to snuggle up, he's never cold, that kind of thing. I know he would have appreciated it (he is an excellent wood worker and understands the time, effort and quality of hand made things, we have a few of his pieces in our house!)...but would he USE it? I don't know. So I send an email to my mother in law and ask her. She says that he really isn't the type to snuggle up with a quilt, but he *does* always bring a blanket and pillow when he travels (which is fairly often), and he would probably use it...just not as much as she uses hers (which she got last Christmas). So I still wasn't sure...but leaning more towards making it...

Well...the next day she emails me again to tell me that that night he got home from work and says to her that he was thinking he might ask me to make him a quilt for when he travels. She told me it was so eerie, like he'd read her emails, lol, but hadn't because he had *just* walked in the door! So she told him "Oh, I don't know...she's going back to work in a week (I'm on maternity leave right now), I don't know if she'll have time with work and the kids and everything..." and then she let me know right away.

So YAY! I get to make a quilt for FIL, I know he wants it and I know he will use it and this makes me very happy! :D

That is incredibally eerie! It was meant to be though. So, now just figure out what FIL's interests are and go from there. I don't even know what to buy or make for my own father, since he will buy it if he needs it or wants it. I sent him a gift certificate for a store called Bi-Mart once. He thanked me very much, but then said they didn't have a Bi-Mart where he lived. :-(

Planning is the funnest part!

Let us know what pattern and fabric you are using. I think masculine quilts are the most difficult. Trying to plan one for my grandson. Have fabrics but not decided on a pattern yet.

Love the story! It will so fun to make this quilt knowing he will love it, use it, and appreciate it.

What fun. We will be sure not to tell him, but please share you pics. A quilt and matching pillow case for his pillow is a wonderful idea. It will be treasured!!
