Go check out the quilting section in your local library.

I agree on checking the tutorials on-line. For some patterns, try Rail Fence or Chinese coins - both you can get on line by googling. Also check out your local quilt store or even JoAnns - they'll have beginner classes. Some people can pick it up by working on their own and others benefit from the class experience. Think about what works for you and go that way. The advantage of a class is that there's an instructor and other students who can help with problems when they occur.

Hello and welcome aboard. I agree with what has been said already. all good advices. That's what I did and there are many web sites that are very helpfull
and here on the board there is plenty of articles
http://www.quiltingboard.com/resources/articles-2/

http://www.quilterscache.com/
if you go in the middle of the page it says "where do you want to go today" hours of reading to do there

start small, have fun and come back here to tell us about your learning steps!

I thought Eleanor Burns' Log Cabin book was a good first book. The directions were clear and the quilt was pretty but easy to make. The rail fence is also easy to make, yet looks striking.
