There are Tons of ways to go - Embroidery, Calligraphy, Applique, even paper piecing. What did you have in mind? How big? Do you want letters on separate blocks or some kind of banner? Do you want to spell out "Love" or use a heart? Will the writing cover the entire quilt, or be in a center medallion or border strip?

Before you begin a commissioned piece for someone, you need to be clear about what they are expecting. It will save a whoole lot of misunderstandings later on.

If I was new to quilting, I would run away from that request as fast as I could.

would be relatively easy to trace and cut the letters to applique. my first 'quilt' was a wall hanging with my daughter's name on it. i just printed the letters really large backwards on my printer and then traced them onto the fusible web. then put that on your fabric and cut it out. press it to your background fabric and finish the rest of your piecing. then quilt!

voila!

Here is a website that gives a tutorial for pieced letters. I've seen them on quilts & they are cool:

Here's a picture of how they look.

You can use almost any display font for inspiration. Here's an applique tutorial for beginners. The stitches you use on the edges can be as simple or elaborate as you choose
