Default I need ur help to finish my quilt

I have 16 sampler blocks made mainly with cat materials. I want to finish each block with a black border that covers about 3/4 of the left side and the bottom. It is not a window effect but is similar. The rest of all sides are done using a neutral. I tried it in black only but it is too stark and all neutral just looks washed out. I know finish this has a name but can't even locate a picture to go by. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks glenda

If black is too dark, how about charcoal or grey?

Can you post some pictures so we get a better idea of what you are looking at?

Sometimes a print in your colour choice instead will give you the same read (I.e. Use a mostly black print perhaps with a white or grey mix if black is what you're looking for) in terms of effect, but not look so harsh or take away from the blocks.

Do you have one color that is found in most of the blocks? I usually look for a color that will lead your eye to the next spot. Black is often too dramatic to do that.

A picture would help us see the problem and then give you some positive feedback.

How about a dark brown?
Sometimes a shade of purple or works well for shadows. Or dark shade of any color, for that matter.

Without knowing what other colors are in the blocks, it is hard to give useful suggestions.

Thank you so much for your quick response. Your answer is exactly what I was looking for and the site you posted is perfect.
To others who responded thank you. There is every color under the sun in the blocks but black is the only color in all of them. I'll attempt to post a pic when I get it finished. Thanks again to all.
