Default I remember when I could buy......

I remember when I could buy a whole roll of Warm & Natural and a whole roll of baby poly batting BOTH for under $250 !!!!! and it wasn't that long ago....

I just came back from Joannes with a roll for W & Natural.. Geeeeeeeez, $280 for the roll with the 50% off coupon before taxes..... Man, seeing the bill stung... I only bought a few things and my total was $ 306...

I'm still in shock.....

They say there is a cotton shortage...BUT I find it hard to believe that it has to go up as high as it has! I think a lot of OUR problem has to do with plain old GREED at the shop level!! Is there really a reason I should have paid nearly twice what I did last year for fabric and batting but yet got nearly the same amount? Maybe we should all stop buying for awhile and see what happens?

I agree, there is certainly no shortage of greed nowdays, and it doesn't just apply to our quilting stuff. Gas, food, utilities are all out of control. I, for one, have decided to take some proactive steps. I don't go anywhere unless it is a necessity, I make menu plans using as much food as I have on hand, buy only the groceries I need to add to my food on hand to make the recipes on the menu plan, keep my heat set low, and use my stash. I absolutely refuse to buy anything unless it is a necessity. It's the only way I know to show my disgust for the greed. I can make do, I don't have to pad their wallets.

I'm with you. I hate the prices of everything. I think it's greed or to just check to see what we will pay for stuff. When ever I say "I remember when I could buy....." my kids say I'm showing my age. They don't seem to be as shocked by prices as I always am. They were kind of broken in with $4.07 gas prices so they think anything under this is a bargan. Mybe they will be saying those famous words "I remember..." when they are not living at home and Mom is not paying their bills.

I agree with you about the greed, but, There really is a cotton shortage this year. I live in the Texas panhandle and there was very little cotton this year due to the drought. My husband works for a John Deere company and they took a loss almost every month due to the lack of farming this past year. All, I can tell you is to make the best of it and Pray, Pray and Pray some more for some good rains and good crops. Just be thankful for what we do have and that we can enjoy something we love to due on some level. We have sooooo much to be thankful for. Praise our Lord for all His blessings.

I don't beleive the prices either, they are selling our gas to countrys in europe instead of lowering our prices. When I started sewing many many years ago I went to a local general store in WI for $1.00 I bought 4 yards of fabric, thread and a pattern and got $.05 in change. Maybe I"m telling my age and It wasn't to long ago (5 years) gas was $. 99 a gallon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm confused. You say you got a roll of Warm and Natural for $280??? You are talking about a 20yd roll, right? I just bought a roll last week from Hancock Fabrics, where they had their batting on sale for 50% off. Normally it's $11.99/yd, so it was $5.99/yd, so the total was $120 (for 20yds), then I used the 15% off my total order coupon that was good for that day, which made it only $102, plus the taxes of course. Surely, you're talking about more than 20 yards on a roll, but I didn't think they sold them that large at Joann's in the store. But, even online, the 40yd roll is $429.99 regular price, so at 50% off it should only be about $215. I'd be making them price match if I could..... Sorry to hear they charged you so much, maybe you need to switch to Hancock's.

I remember when I could buy a gallon of gas for 23¢ and a new VW for $2,000. I simply don't believe batting and fabric price increases have anything to do with greed.

Even if the cotton growers were to have a fantastic year this year, do you really think the prices would come down? It seems to me once the prices go up they stay up, or they go up several dollars very quickly and come down a few cents at a time and very slowly. Sale prices now are what we used to pay everyday.
