I'm planning a quilt for my cousin's husband.
He said, "can you do a nordic design?"

I have no idea what it is, so I thought I'd come here first.

Anyone know what "nordic" designs are?

When I think of Nordic Design, I think of furniture (IKEA, the egg chair) and sweaters (Lopi, Fair Isle). Search Google images for Nordic Patterns and see if any of the knit patterns remind you of quilt blocks. Most are reflective patterns like Bear's Paw, Union Square or Winding Ways. There are a lot of hearts and stars as well. Sounds like a fun project, good luck!

I think I would ask him what "Nordic" means in his eyes. It could be anything from flowery rosemaling designs to trolls to many other things. Ask him for a picture of something "Nordic". An IKEA catalog would be great inspiration!

Does he want it white with snowflakes, or elves/gnomes? I think he needs to give a definition of Nordic!

I think of hearty sailing and cold when I think of Nordic. I think the crossed canoes block would be a good quilt pattern done in stark contrasting blues for cold and ocean.

Also Nordic has a lot of Reindeer/Deer type images with trees. If you appliqué, that may be a design to to a row by row quilt. Each row could be a different Nordic design element.

You could always contact the members from Norway and Sweden (GladGrams, Sunnyhope, and jette) to see what they think on the topic. :D
