Default If you wanted to make a queen sized quilt with 12 inch blocks

How many blocks would I need to do? I would like borders in between the blocks as well.

I know this is a simple question....sorry!

Actually, it isn't a simple question. How big is your sashing going to be? Do you want more borders around the outside? How far down on the bed do you want it to come? How thick is the matress.

Here is a link about sizes.

Basically, 36 twelve inch blocks sashed with 3" strips would get you to a square queen size of around 90". I like mine longer.

Sorry I wasn't more help.

That is actually really helpful! Thanks so much, so I may even do 36 with 3 inch sashes and a thicker border on the outside. but maybe do another row at the top to make it longer? I think part of the issues I am having with quitling is that I am not really good with numbers or precision.

Another thing you might want to consider, is if you want to have pillow tuck. You will need to have extra length for that.

I don't do math in public! I have embarrassed myself way too many times! (and wasted too much fabric!) This board is always helpful with figuring out block sizes, quilt sizes, yardage etc. That's what we are here for! When I am trying to figure out things, I often use graph paper or just plain paper. I will work at it for awhile and then when I come up with an answer that I think is correct, I will come to this board and and get the RIGHT answer!!!!!
