Speaking of point turners, I recently saw a tip in a magazine for beginning sewers that I had bought for my sewing student:

To get a good turned point, don't put your needle down and turn your point abruptly, but take two stitched across the top of the angle and then turn your stitches downward and you will have a perfect point, not rounded at all, when you turn it out. I didn't believe it but it worked! Learn something every day!

That little piece of plastic is a total gem that works perfectly and doesn't cost anything.
Joanie2, show me next time I see you 'cause I can't envision it. And I just went to the fridge and checked the milk.

Linda go to the Quilt in a Day website. Search notions, on page 4 there is a bodkin. I bought one of these in Paducah about 8 years ago. It is a handy little sucker. There is also a wooden thing that looks like what you described.

I haven't seen a fabric store that doesn't carry this item. As a matter of fact I was just looking at them at Fabric Depot in Portland, Oregon yesterday. It was made by Clover and they had all Clover things 50% off, it might still be going on. But it was not wood it was a hard white plastic. Good luck.

Called a point turner, not a quilting notion, but for sewing clothes.
