Yesterday I was showing my SIL a table runner I was making for my mom. While looking it over, she noticed the hand quilting I had completed and said "I don't know if you realize this or not but there's an easier way to do this. You make a tie in the center of each square." She then proceded to tell me step by step how to accomplish this technique as if it was the newest thing in quilting. When she was done.....and it was a long lesson :)...........she finished by saying "I'm so glad I could contribute something to your new hobby. If you need more help, just let me know." I was trying not to laugh or be ungrateful but I thought I was moving ahead in my quilting education/journey by attempting hand quilting or FMQ. Maybe my hand quilting wasn't quite up to par. LOL How do you all handle well meaning advice????

I think I would have to say " I wasn't looking for easy!"

Just say thank you and forget about it; she meant well.

" I never thought of that. Thanks!" And then do what you're doing. You can chuckle when she's gone.

QBeth....you are absolutely right! I did get off easy :) She at least wasn't rude, just well meaning. LOL I guess my feelings were hurt that she didn't recognize the special work I had added to make this an even more special quilting project for my wonderful Mom.

Takes all types, doesn't it. Even the ones that mean no harm. At least they can provide some amusement. but, I don't blame you for being hurt!! Give credit where it's due -- hand quilting is NOT easy, is probably on the edge of extinction, and good for you for keeping it alive!

Hey, can you post a picture??

Maybe mention you were trying to expand your skills  Or that you thought the tying would not lay as flat as you wanted for a table runner

If you know in your heart that she meant well, let it go.

But I'm pretty sure you just wanted her to say - "hey, that's looking good - "

Here's my project with the only thing remaining is to complete the binding. I had a lot of fun "posing" my quilt outdoors!

My dogs were helping, possible because the puppy is asleep somewhere!
