    Inserting skinny border without mitering?

    I want to add a skinny stop border to a quilt....like 1/2" finished. Is there a way to sew the skinny fabric strips to the 4" border strips and attach to quilt without mitering the corners? If I just sew the strips as usual, the skinny border strips will "cut off" the flow of the large border in the corners...am I making sense?? I need to finish this quilt for 92 yr old FIL who is moving to assisted living tomorrow, and I am afraid I don't have enough border fabric left to miter the corners...and I had to order the fabric online, so it will take too long to order additional fabric. I deviated from my original plan....when will I learn to order MORE than I need??

    The only thing that I can think of would be to use a cornerstone in the corners.

    That is what I do. I usually cut the fabric strips 1.125 inches for a folded border and then trim it done to 1/2" after pressing it in half like binding. But I had problem with this table runner because I didn't want to put the folded edge on the quilt itself. You don't have to miter, you just fold back the ends in the shape of a miter and cut the end off.

    Maniac, your runner is beautiful! I am a little confused about your method though...will have some more coffee and reread it! Cornerstones might work! Thanks Maggiemay! And I need to google 1/2 flange Tartan!

    I know it's harder to attach a narrow border to the whole quilt but it is doable and you could just attach the last border separately as well.

    I do flange borders for something that narrow. If you google flange borders there are tutorials out there.

    Just realize that flanges can be harder to actually quilt since it is not attached on one side. You have to be willing to quilt on both sides of it without quilting over it. You wouldn't want to do a panto or edge to edge over it.
