Default intense pencil ?

Do you wash fabric first?
What do you use on top to set the color so you can wash it.
I`ve heard aloe ver gel and textile medium. What is the difference.
Thanks Gale

I used aloe vera gel, and it was pretty inexpensive. I don't know about setting the color that way, though.

Here's a tutorial on the board about using them:

Thanks for asking this question because the PDF by Jane Knapp is awesome!

My DD played with these pencils and she didn't wash the fabric first, and used the fabric medium, which made it quite stiff. We did wash it (by hand) after the fabric medium dried which made it a bit softer but it is still quite stiff.

When I get a chance I want to play with them. I would try washed and unwashed fabric then draw on them, I want to try dry pencils and also dipping them in water. I would do little samples of every different combination you could think of and mark it on the fabric with permanent marker. Then you have your own little reference.

Thanks Woody, great idea doing test pieces.
wonder what you can use that doesn`t make it stiff that will do the same job.

Jacquard Colorless Extender does not change the hand much, but it needs to be heat set and it's not the best of the sealers. Any of the standard sealing products (Fabric Mod Podge, Matte Medium, Textile Medium, Colorless Extender) can be used either before or after the Inktense pencils (iow, under or over them).

Wondering why you would dip the pencils in water instead of just wetting the marks made with dry pencils, but it's an interesting idea. Everyone's approach with these pencils and blocks is different it seems. Have fun!

I have used Jane Knapp's method using pure aloe vera. Got it at Walmart. I always wash all of my fabrics first. Love working with Inktense pencils. Very vivid colors.
