Just did the search for batting and flannel was mentioned (never though of that). I've seen the packages that say okay for hand or machine, cotton, silk and poly. The quilt is a queen size and will be used in North Carolina. If flannel is used do you do the wavy piecing tech. to make it big enough or should I just use batting and if so which is best for hand quilting (i want the needle to go though like butter!) and what's with this prewashing? thanks Becky

I have neve used flannel but do like cotton batting. I don't prewash batting though. I guess it a matter of whether you like the wrilkly look after it ahs been washed (after quilting that is) I like the old timey look, myself. Just bought some nice Hobbs all cotton batting--it was soooo soft! Got it at JoaAnnes a couple of weeks ago on sale.

No matter which type of batting you use, The best way to join and increase size is using the wavy piecing method. As to whether flannel or not,the end result is the question. If in doubt, take a needle with you and see how well the needle travels through the fabric. This will help you determine whether you want to hand quilt or not.

I buy inexpensive blankets ,all kinds. I use new and used. They work really well when hand quilting, especialy the poly blend, I just remove the binding, can join several or cut them down. You do not need the glue usually to hold the layers. Try it on a small piece and let me know what you think.
