Welcome to the Quilting Board!

The problem with putting the large squares on point is you are going to have to fill in the edges of the quilt top with half triangles. I think I would show her a couple of pictures of both ways before starting. Does she want Single Irish Chain, Double or Triple?
A normal Irish Chain quilt is on point. There are tremendous variations in Irish Chain, though, depending on how many chains you do (single, double, triple) and also on how large the squares are. I usually don't care as much for single Irish Chains that are done in large squares (say, 3" unfinished squares) as to me they look too much like a 9-patch place on point. What type of Irish Chain has your friend chosen? You need to know if it's single, double or triple.
Oops. She wants a single about 6.5 inch squares. She is thinking of appliguing (sp) in every other blank square.

I meant I like the small squares smaller than 3".
I am finishing up this quilt top that is a single Irish chain with appliqued Sunbonnet Sue/Sam. I did 2" finished squares with 10" blocks for the applique. I added the extra squares in the corners to mimic being on point (Cross in a Square block). Depending on your pattern, you can actually turn them on point from the get-go, or you can use a non-directional print or solid and sew your rows together & just finish with a HST on either end of your row. Here's a link to some sketches of various Single Irish Chain patterns:

Bree, Your quilt is so adorable!
Does she want it scrappy?? With a 6" required background block, you probably can just make a 9 patch that have 2" finished squares.

A Good Friend, like an old quilt, is both a Treasure and a Comfort
