In a recent class (Sewing Machine 101) the instructor went over the Memory option on most of the newer machines and encouraged us to program at least one option. I knew it was there but just never took the time to set it up. On regular cotton piecing, I always have to move my needle setting upon starting the machine...
attitude is everything...the rest will fall into place.

I have the manual and the same machine. I always move my needle when starting, never noticed this feature.

Regardless of the amount of fabric in the right of the needle it is important to measure a
sample strip set to see if the finished piece in the center is the correct size. There are some
videos and tutorials that show this.
