I decided to make a quilt with friendship stars. Does it matter which direction the points go? For most of the stars I see online, they seem to have the top point going towards the left, but a lot are also pointing to the right.

(In case that's not explained well, to me the star on this link is "pointing towards the left.")

Thanks for any help you can give!

i dont think it matters you may want to do them pointing all in the same direction or alternate directions

From looking at your link to the pattern, no matter which way you turn the block, the top is going to point to the left. If you wanted it to go right, it shouldn't be too hard to edit the pattern. What colors are you going to use?

I have never seen this block point the opposite direction, but it is your quilt!

Personally, I prefer the points to go opposing directions thru out the quilt, scattered, if you will. I feel it adds more movement and visual interest to the design.

I prefer alternating the points, but it's your quilt and your choice. To my way of thinking, one of the harder things about a friendship star, of which I have made a great many, is keeping the points within a single star consistant. for that, I suggest laying out the subunits as they will be, then working you way through them, row by row. When you are making a whole bunch, it is easy to have one that goes gallywonkers.

Yeah, what QM said. I was going to say that but then I read her post and there it was. Okay, I probably wouldn't have used the word "gallywonkers" but I like it so I might in the future.

Friendship star is my favorite block and I have done them both ways. I sometimes do both in the same quilt.

I couldn't quite picture using the stars in both directions, so I put an example in EQ7. I think it makes a neat design.
