Default Sizzix for trapunto

I was just watching Quilting Arts on PBS. I love trapunto and Ebony showed a great new way to do it. She cut out 1" thick high-loft batting with her Sizzix. She spray basted the shapes to the back of her top fabric and used lightweight fusible to keep the batting together on the back. She sewed around the shapes from the front with water soluble thread in the top and bobbin of the machine. She then layered that with her regular batting and backing and stippled around the shapes. Pretty nifty technique. The one thing I disagreed with was her statement that 'traditional' trapunto is to sew with a whole piece of batting and cut around it. Traditional trapunto is done by sewing the shapes, cutting a slit in the back, and stuffing that with filling.

The technique with sewing "around the shapes from the front with water soluble thread in the top and bobbin of the machine" has been around for over a decade. I still have some of the water soluble thread. But interesting to be able to cut the poly batting with a Sizzix.

Hi Nan. How is your new machine? I am about to search for a replacement for my Viking Sapphire! I am just beginning to try trapunto and I am certainly going to try what you suggest! Thanks.
