    Default Jelly Roll question

I have never purchased a jelly roll.. until today. I wanted to check them out. I have a couple questions 1) I don't prewash this fabric do I? 2) Can I make hexagon quilt squares from a jelly roll? (or is there a lot of waste doing that?)

I have used exactly one Jelly roll and although I usually prewash, in this case I did not. I paired it with some prewashed fabric so I guess we'll see how that turns out when I wash the quilt, but I did read that many people pair precuts with prewashed fabric and mostly don't have a problem. I don't know about the hexagon quilt squares because I'm not sure what you are describing. Could you post more details?

Some pre-wash their jelly rolls. I cut my hexs from strips I cut because it made it easier to cut them out. How much waste will be if your hexs are less than 2.5" in height. My 1" hex I cut 2.25" strips

What a terrific idea, I have never thought of cutting hexies out of a precut. I have a jelly roll gathering dust, when I get tired of looking at it, it would make an excellant flower garden project. Thanks.

Thank your for your replies... I am leaning toward not prewashing. toverly: you hit the nail right on the head.. I am thinking about a flower garden quilt I have just never used jelly rolls to know what size hexagon block it will provide.(I have never used hexagon quilt blocks either - its going to be an adventure) ManiacQuilter2: you say your 1" hex are cut from 2.25" strip... you mean each side of the hexagon is 1"?

I use the 2 1/2 inch mini charm packs to English paper piece hexies (forgot the size-maybe 1 inch?) and the 1 1/2 inch diamonds that make the 6 point stars. I just find it easier and more convenient than cutting myself.

Hey, Meyert, I just noticed you're southern IN. I grew up near Paoli and lived in Evansville, Salem and New Albany. Southern Indiana is very pretty!

Susann: yes Indiana's not all bad Us Hoosiers need to stick together. I ordered a pack of hexagon templates... I hope one of them works on the jelly roll. Can't wait to try this out

I just stopped at my lqs yesterday to see if they had any in-no luck I need to order another package of the diamonds so guess I'll add hexies to the order too. I just realized that I have a June Taylor shape cut ruler that would make cutting jelly rolls into diamonds really easy. June Taylor also has a hexie ruler but it doesn't cut small enough to use jelly rolls.

I just made a Basket Weave quilt using a jelly roll. I did not pre wash it and used it with pre washed fabrics for two borders and it turned out fine. I wash all my quilts as soon as I finish sewing on the binding. It washed and dried very well, just like all my other quilts.

when I get tired of looking at it,

OMG - that is me too!!! I have been quilting for about 40 years and have never bought any precuts until I ordered two from the daily deal at Missouri Quilt Co. They are sitting in front of my TV on the stand and I just love looking at them. Matter fact, everybody that comes to my house has to go and see what they are. They are both brightly colored. MY DD said that she would never want to unroll it and use it - same thoughts as I have.
