HELP..... I have just bought 4 jelly rolls. First time ever!!!!
Question: how do I wash such small strips??? I am scared they will unravel a bit... Thinking of placing in net lingerie bag and just swishing in sink with a bit of washing powder and then hanging up on washing line.... Is that the right way of doing this???
Also I don't know what to do with them now. They are sort of pastel coloured. I prefer bright colours BUT the price was just right....:lol:

I love Jelly Rolls! I never wash them just cut and sew! There are
lots of books with ideas.Check out Missouriquiltcompany web site.They do great tutorials.

Some people wet them and dry them. I have heard some people put them in lingerie bags, then dry them. I don't wash mine either, but some people have to.

I have a jelly roll that I haven't cut into yet (my first.) Very excited about it, too. I'm not planning to wash it - will just start cutting and sewing when I've finished the many other projects that I have on the go right now.

If you can spare the cash I'd recommend Pam & Nicky Lintott's Jelly Roll Quilts book which has heaps of inspiration. I love that book and it seems to be discounted at a number of online book retailers at the moment.

Love jelly rolls and never thought to wash them. I got the Pam&Nicky books at a discount at Connecting threads.

unless there is a worry about color running usually pre-cuts are not meant to be pre-washed. the manufacturers say it is not so necessary as it used to be. if you are worried about color runs i would test them in the sink. if they do need to be pre-washed use the net bag. any time i pre-wash i put in washer and dryer, there are only 2 reasons for me to pre-wash, color running or shrinkage. if i'm worried about shrinkage it is necessary to put it into the dryer...so the shrinkage gets done. i would think pastels would be stable.

I have not washed the jelly rolls I have. Nor have I washed the finished top that I'm currently quilting that was made from a jelly roll. Don't anticipate a problem, but if one develops I'll deal with it then...

have made 5 quilts with jelly rolls, in the middle of #6..have never prewashed them and have never had a problem, even a lecien one which had a few burgundys in it..

moda fabric is very high quality patchwork fabric, you should never have to prewash it unless you truly are worried about a particular red, purple or blue..if thats the case, snip a weeny corner from any of concern in the range, wet it and put it on a white tissue to dry..no bleed its fine, as all in the range will be..

rule of thumb, any high quality patchwork fabric shouldn't shrink enough to affect any quilt top..if in doubt do 2 things:-

1 - look closely at its surface and run your fingers across it, it should look even and feel smooth..

2 - hold it up to the light..the bigger the spaces between the weave, the more chance of it shrinking..if the spaces in the weave are near as wide as the threads in the weave, or wider, prewash..usually the good stuff doesn't have this problem..but don't let it stop you buying a bargain either, just allow extra when you buy and prewash it before adding to the stash..

Wow thank you ladies... As I have never bought a jelly roll I really did not know how to proceed... The label tells me to wash before sewing... No it is not moda - that would have cost me 10 times more.... this is made in India.... it is 100% cotton and I thought if I make a hash of it I would not have spent a helluva lot of money... thanks... ciao ciao

I was wondering the same thing. I have just purchased some 2.5 inch strips from Connecting Threads And was afraid to wash in case of shrinkage and raveling. So for the first time I guess I am not washing the fabric. This is going to be hard.........
