I am looking for a straight stitch machine for quilting. These are the two machines I am thinking about. My local machine store has the Brother machine. I tried it out and liked it. I can see where a machine like this could make a difference in one's quilting. I didn't like the foot pedal as it seemed to offer little resistance in speed. It wasn't easy to control the speed, but maybe it takes practice. Both machines were cheaper if I were to order online. Also, if I were to do piecing, though the Brother has a 1/4 " foot, it does not have the edge guide. I don't know if the Juki has an 1/4" edge guide foot. I learned about the Juki from the Sharon Schamber site. She has an older model. I would appreciate comments about either machine.

I know nothing about the Brother, but I have the Juki and I love it. I absolutely love quilting with it. I have never had it up to full speed. I have little or no trouble controlling the speed.

I have been wondering the same question. I have a "walmart special" cheapo machine that is a Brother. I have had it for 4 years the poor thing has never been to the shop, I clean it here at the house and no matter what I do to the poor thing it keeps working and has never caused me any trouble. SO I was going to just stay with the Brother brand. But after reading what Minnow wrote I am scared <nail biting>. I just looked and I can get the Juki online cheaper than I can get the Brother online or at my local dealer.

I DON'T KNOW!!!!!

Thank you Joan for asking this question!

I have the Juki TL98E which is an older model than the QE. I use it mainly for machine quilting on a Superquilter frame but lately I've been using it for piecing as well. It's awesome! My favorite thing is the thread cutter...it cuts the thread and leaves exactly enough to start the next seam, so when you finish piecing your quilt there are no long thread ends to trim.

I've also used it for machine quilting off the frame and it does a great job on that too.

I haven't used the Brother but I've heard good things about it.

Don't let one person's experience put you off buying another Brother machine. The lower end machines may not be made for heavy duty use, but Brother do make good machines. I have a top of the line Brother sewing/embroidery machine that I wouldn't trade for anything.

I have the Brother PQ1500S, and have quilted queen size and one king size quilts with it. Never had a problem; I bought my DIL a brother and always recommend the brand. I am currently piecing with the Brother 4000D. Never heard of needing a special oil. I also own the Elna Quilter Dream. I am looking to sell the Brother 1500 as I upgraded to HQ16.

I have the Juki. LOVE it! She and I have a wonderful relationship, and she doesn't complain much.......The 1/4" foot doesn't have a guide, but it does have the markings on the needle plate. I compensate by using a stick on guide that doesn't hurt the machine. Otherwise you can use that old fashioned magnet seam guide, I think I have one around here somewhere.....The freemotion is so easy on this one. and love the thread cutter.

Thank you all for your comments so far. It looks like both machines are well liked and good for what I want. The Juki machine is a little cheaper, but that may be because it doesn't have the bigger sewing space. I am not interested in a frame. Just wanted to use it as a sit down machine, and was thinking that I would have it inserted in the table so the machine is even with the surrounding sewing space. I couldn't do that with the brother. I did try the Brother today and it was fun and in town,so I am still thinking.
