Default just wondering??

do you make most of your quilts to hang just to the edge of the mattress or to the floor like a bed spread?

I like to make most of my quilts to the edge of the matteress but I was thinking it would be nice making them to the floor so you didn't have to use a bed skirt...

if you don't use a bed skirt what do you use to cover the box spring or do you just leave it?

I was also thinking that if I didn't have a bed skirt ..which I don't right now...that I could measure around the three sides and buy half that in fabric cut it in half on the fold and just slide the cut edge of the fabric under the matteress around three sides ..this would look like a stright bed skirt and no sewing... and if I got tired of it I could always put it in a quilt...

what do you think would it work?.....Thanks

i like my quilts only mattress length because floor length makes them too heavy. also, i often throw off my covers in the night and floor length makes that too difficult.

It's not an either/or situation.

For beds one might also make them with enough overhang....say 4-5" on a side to cover a body (or two) in bed. Or short enough that they fit just under the fold where the pillows go, with 4-5" overhang at the foot.
I make my quilts whatever they turn out to be....fabric and patterns talk to me, don't they to you?.....and they tell me what they want to be.
Then again, I might make a "nap' sized quilt that would just cover me shoulders to feet, and fold it on the foot of the bed during awake time.

Don't think I would want mine floor length unless I was using it as a comforter or bedspread. I like mine to cover the mattress and be long enough to be tucked in at the bottom.

often i make them to fit the bed they are for- covering the mattress & box springs but not dragging on the floor- sometimes a pattern insists on ending before then- sometimes they are longer, or shorter...just depends on what i want at the time & the pattern/design i am making.
as for your (skirt) idea- if you want- go for it- as you said- it would be easy enough to trade out- change with any whim & you can use the fabric for other things if that's what you want to do-
make what works for you- that's one of the great things about quilting, you can design your own bedding to fit your desires & no one else will have what you have- it's personally yours.

My quilts talk to me as well...they end up being whatever they are, just because. Now, if they're for a customer, that's different. Then they are what the customer wants...which sometimes makes my life a bit difficult!

I would like to make them floor length, but we have old beds and sits up too high. Almost need a step stool to get in them as they are. I am happy if they hang over the edge and then some. No matter how deep I make the borders, they still just hang over the edge. I am usually happy to get them done and happy they cover the bed.

They are usually as long or short as the blocks come out when I put it all together. I like them long because so they are warmer and I don't get uncovered when I toss around during the night.

Thank you all for your reply to this post, it was very interesting to hear what everyone thinks on this subject...

mostly everyone that I have made quilts for use them like a bedspread..folding them down at the foot of the bed and then in the morning making the bed with the quilt showing. it makes me feel good that all I have made use them but wish they would use then for what they are made for..to keep you warm..LOL but I guess to each his own..

me I have a few on my bed in the winter and really don't worry how they look, they just keep us warm and toastie..

using a fitter sheet on the box spring is a good idea thanks so much will have to try that.. thanks everyone for your reply
