I have a question that I'm sure I could ask at my LQS, but you know I'm thinking about it right now and it's driving me nuts. I am making the mystery quilt from my LQS. It will be a queen sized quilt. I need to go ahead and buy the backing while it's on sale, but I cannot figure out how much I need. They had told me 8.5 yards, but the fabric I'm looking at is one-way, so I'm assuming I'll need to buy more to make it line up? Anyone want to give me a guess as to how much I'll really need? Thanks in advance!

What is the 'repeat' of your fabric? If you aren't familiar with the term, it means what is the measurement from the beginning of the design to the spot where it starts over again on the length of the fabric.

I'm terrible at figuring this kind of stuff. I have to sit down with a piece of paper and literally draw out all my measurements as a picture to figure out how many yards I need. I've not had to worry with a repeating design though. Good luck!

You will have to know what the repeat is. And then , probably no more than an extra yard to make sure you have enough to line it up.

OK, well good to know it's not a ton of extra fabric :)It's actually a very tiny repeat, it's sort of like wavy stripes with a scattering of paisleys in between. The stripes are maybe 1/2inch wide and go the width of the fabric.........with perhaps 1 inch in between stripes.........so I'm thinking that I"m much more concerned with lining the stripe part up than the repeat of the paisleys. Does that make sense???

Makes perfect sense to me. I hate working with stripes    No matter how straight they are, I seem to be able to pull then out of line before finishing. Good luck, can't wait to see it!!

When I am not sure how much I will need and it is on sale, I buy 9 yards for a back. This will give you three lengths of the quilt top and you will have a piece left over on the side.

Ditto, every time. Tried once without doing that... :-(
