A friend of mine asked me to find a pattern for a lap quilt that she would like to make out of her dad's flannel shirts. He passed away several months ago and she would like to make a lap quilt for her mother. Do you have any ideas for me to share with her. Thanks!

With flannel, I would keep the pattern simple -- few seams and no big intersections. I think I would be inclined to use 5" squares and have fun arranging them in a pattern. Another idea would be a 9-patch or a simple star.

The easiest way I know of to look for patterns it to do a Google image search. I searched for "flannel quilt patterns"
Here is the link:

http://www.google.com/search?q=flann...ls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=DOGuTrqVO4GJsgLo4dX9Dg&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CEAQ_AUoAQ&biw=1024&bih=651&sei=%20WuGuToPmMsStsALc9_z9Dg

Often times if you click on the image, you'll be taken to a link where you can find or purchase the pattern. There are a lot of really cute flannel quilts on the link. "Dad or Daddy's shirt quilt pattern" might be another useful way to search. I hope this is helpful and I am very sorry for your and your mothers loss.

Check out Bonnie Hunter's scrap quilts on http://quiltville.com/

She has a book titled "Scraps and Shirt Tails" but also has a lot of free patterns on the above web site - you will just have to nose around the site. Scroll down and look on the right side of the page for Free Scrap Quilt Patterns.

I saw a lap quilt that was one giant bear paw block quilt, with a spiky border. It was gorgeous.

Thinking along the same lines, you could do one giant carpenter's wheel block.

My FIL passed last month. So I am using all his flannels for 4 quilts.

The pattern I'm doing is brick wall. All the quilts will be going to my BIL's.

Good Luck

Like the idea for the bear paw pattern!
