I have just finished a lap quilt and would like to quilt it on my machine. My question is should I start in the center of the quilt and work my way out or start on an outside edge and work my way across. I have basted the devil out of it so I'm hoping it doesn't shift too much. I've not tried this before and I'm getting too old for trial and error. Thanks for helping.

Yes...I always start in the center and work my way out that way you can work any little bubbles or nicks out as you go. Good luck

I start from the center and work out. Are you FMQ or stitch in the ditch?

I guess I'm too new to this. What is FMQ?

FMQ is free motion quilting (where you drop the feed dogs and use the quilting/darning foot) SID is stitch-in-the-ditch, where you sew in the seam line of each row. SID is best done using a walking foot to avoid the layers shifting.

When doing FMQ you generally start in the center and work your way out.

When doing SID you generally start in the middle of the quilt but at the edge of a seam.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. Hopefully I'll figure all this out this afternoon when I sit at the machine.

I start in the center too... up and then down, and then side to side to make 4 quadrants. Then I go beside each of these 4 lines :D:D:D
