Hi girls (and boys) I am currently planning on making a form of lap quilt for my mother in Law who has a mobility scooter and complains that it could catch in the wheels. Any ideas on a slight deviation in style to prevent this? Any help would be appreciated.

PS i am planning on adding a thermal lining between the top and the batting for insulation as she feels the cold badly.

How about rounding off the bottom and adding elastic to go around her legs at the back? You could just round off the corners at the bottom so that it doesn't catch in the wheels. What a lovely thought. You could also contact your local mobility centre and ask their advice.

In addition to this, could you use velcro to attach the elastic?

Yes I did wonder as to whether a strap that went around the back of the legs and velcro the ends so that it will be easy to remove.

Does she have enough mobility to bend down and attach elastic? When leaning too far forward in a wheelchair, it's very easy to fall out. Ask me how I know.

If she is totally not walking, then I would do a foot warmer type thing. Make the quilt rather narrow, make a padded piece as wide as the quilt about a foot deep. Sew it to the quilt with wrong sides together and round the corners. Do not sew across the top edge, of course. Then flip it. Viola, a pocket for the feet.

I make lap quilts to donate to the nursing homes. I make them no bigger than 40 in square and they seem to work fine. I also back them with flannel so they stay in place better. I don't use a batting with mine. That way they will drape better and not get caught in the wheels.
