I don't know the "official" dimensions, but I usually make mine 4x5 12" finished blocks. With borders and/or sashing they turn out just about right. Might depend on how big or tall the recipient is, too.

I'm new to this so I used an old blanket and laid it across myself, pinned it and measured when it looked/felt right.
Happy quilting.

A lap quilt can be any size you want it to be. If the person who it is for is short, then make it to fit that person and if the person is very tall, then I'd make it much longer. I like my lap quilts to tuck under my chin and my toes!

I make mine WOF and then the length as long as I want it. That way I have no piecing on the backing.

Anymore a lap quilt seams to mean any size from the traditional cover your lap, up to 60" X 72" or longer. :D:D:D

Just be sure they aren't so long they get caught in the wheels.

I do what I call "personal quilts". Just big enough for one person to cover up with. I've found 60" x 80" is just right for any one person to roll up in!
