I just found a great linen which I feel would make a great backing for a quilt. Has anyone used a sheet for quilting and how did it turn out? Sorry if this topic has been talked about before! :shock: :shock: :shock:

If it is for hand quilting it's kind of rough on the hands. You will get lots of opinions. I have used sheets and hand quilted the quilt. I was very please with the outcome. It's your quilt do as you like:)

I have used vintage sheet from the 60s to back a quilt that I'm quilting myself. So far no problems

If machine quilting it is no problem. If hand quilting, it depends on the weight of the sheet. I used a sheet once and it was very hard to hand quilt. There are lighter weight sheets, however, that I think would be fine.

so, you planning a sheet? or linen?
sheets usually have higher thread counts than the cottons you normally use- they work ok when machine quilting are more difficult to hand quilt (like using batiks)
linen on the other hand has a looser weave-so hand quilts easily- but is a courser fabric- wears like steel- makes beautiful quilts- especially when teemed with other luxury fabrics-like linen/silk is fabulous! but very expensive.

If its a high thread count with machine quilting it will sometimes skip stitches or rip the fabric. I do a test piece before using in a quilt.
