A friend told me that you aren't a quilter until you make a log cabin quilt. Even if I make one, I still have a long way to go. Anyway, I have seen free patterns on the net but have yet to find one that tells me how much material I need for an entire quilt. I have scraps that can be cut but don't know if I have enough. What am I missing here!!! Can anyone help me?
    Thanks.

Well, are you thinking about doing a scrappy quilt, or more of a planned quilt? How big?How many different colors?

a queen size, logs cut into 1&1/2" strips takes 15 yards for the top.

I have six different beautiful purple batiks all 1/2 yard and plenty of white. I want to make the center a really pretty blue/purple batik. Not sure about block sizes but am thinking 10 1/2 by 10 1/2. I did my own calculations and came up with that size for blocks. Of course being new, I am probably so wrong. If I need more material (and probably do) that's no problem. Just need to know. I would like to make a full size.

Thanks - trying to make a full size. Don't even have enough material for a full. That's what I needed to know.

The Thinking Outside the Block quilt I just finished (see it under Pictures) took about 1 to 1.25 yards per color for a 5 ft by 5 ft quilt without the border and not including the center color (I used a fat quarter for those). The blocks were 6.5" and there were 5 colors per block. The strips were 1.5 inches wide. I did the math to calculate yardage: for example: Color 1 requires 2 strips, 6" and 5" at 1.5" wide. Number of blocks needed is 25, fabric is 44". The math is 6+5 = 11". 44"/11" = 4 of the 11" pieces per the width of the fabric. Since I need 25 blocks, then it is 25/4 - 6.25 which is the number of full 44" strips I need to make 25 of the 11" pieces. If my strips are all 1.5" wide, then 6.25 x 1.5 = 9.73 inches or approx. 1/4 yard. You could easily set up a formula in MS Excel to calculate this.

Whoa!!! Thanks for the calculations. Very glad that I am at least proficient with Excel.

Have you researched the origins of the log cabin quilt? I always find quilt origins fascinating :) Traditionally . . .the center square was red as that was symbolic of the flames in the log cabin's hearth/fireplace. But as my grandmother always said . . ."know the rules, then break away" :)

In order for your logs to stand out . . you'll want to add some contrasting fabric . . . .so you might still be able to make it work using your lovely batiks :)

In my older Log Cabin Quilts booklet (Judy Martin and Bonnie Lehman, ISBN #
0-09602970-1-4 you would find one page with Magic Number System
chart which shows how to determine yardage for these quilts.
It also shows numerous ideas for different blocks and settings.
You may be able to find book on Amazon.com
Or I can copy page for you.
