I'm starting my research on a long arm machine. I've been reading through the posts on here - invaluable wealth of information. I've been checking out the websites, planning to test drive, all that.

What's frustrating me is I can't find prices! It's like shopping for a car. We spent 15 minutes with this horrible salesman who kept trying to get me to take a green convertible bug when all I wanted was an estimate on what a new (blue hard top) bug would cost. And he refused to give me an estimate and we ended up walking out.

I can find prices for the HandiQuilter, no problem. Does anyone know approx what a Tin Lizzie costs (haven't decided which model I like) or the Baby Lock Crown Jewel? I get you can't get me a definite $, but a general estimate would be very much appreciated!! Thanks :)

Sorry I can't help but just wanted to comiserate with your frustration. I've had the same problem with domestic sewing machines. Fortunately patternreview.com has reviews with prices paid, but obviously not for new models or all models. I'm fed up with the secretive pricing system.

Blehhh! Have the same issues. Did get a quote from Innova no problems but the rest forget it. I think I will eventually end up with that one as I am fed up with the rest. I like how that one runs too. For now no new machines but I can dream.


I found a used Babylock Jewel for about $2700 but no idea what that compares to.

try doing a search (web-search) for long-arm quilting comparison's--- a couple of the magazines have done comparisons of all the (readily available) long arms...and they include basic prices and all the features available for each machine. one of the magazines is Quilters Home...and Quilters' newsletter Magazine...probably other's too, i don't know which months issues. but they are very informative and give you a guideline so when shopping you will know if you are seeing a bargain or a rip-off

Yarn or Fabric

You can spend A LOT. It really depends on how much you want to spend and how big of a throat you want.

You can also save a lot if you go the used route - that is what I did with my Bailey. Check your Craigslist or join some of the yahoogroups.

You will probably also get cheaper prices if you deal directly through the dealers.

The prices are generally out there - for the sticker price. What you end up with if you go through a dealer or get a used set up is different.

I would love to own a long arm but I just can't afford one! Long arms purchased new can range from $10,000 to $25,000 (like the Gammill Statler Stitcher). The best way to get an exact quote is to visit a dealer, and if you go to the website of a brand you're interested in you should be able to search for a dealer near you.

Another option would be a midarm (Tin Lizzie, or Handiquilter would be two suggestions that come to mind) which I believe are more in the range of $4,000 to $10,000 new. The difference is mainly in the throat space, it's a few inches smaller than a long arm but still gives you more stitching space than you would get on your domestic machine. These are something you can also find used, just like long arms, for less.

There's also the Bailey, WOW and others that I can't think of right now, that are in the general range of 4-6 thousand. The prices can be hard to find, if not impossible, but you can find the prices on the Bailey. Maybe if you either emailed the company or called them to let them know it's very hard or impossible to find a price list.

I just paid $5400 for the Tin Lizzie 18. It includes delivery, setup and 1 day of training. It was a floor model at the local sew & vac.
