Ok, I have a hankerin' to make one of those big sunburst patterns. You know the ones with a bazillion long, skinny points that pretty much cover the whole bed? A center medallion style. I have a book with a picture of one, but no pattern. Have any of you seen a pattern for these? Probably too big for paper piecing. Maybe what I am looking for is the "mariner's compass" pattern, but somehow those don't look exactly right.

Oh, I love the Mariners Compass. Hope to make one someday. It's pretty intimidating.

quiltsmart has one that you piece to their preprinted foundation - i'm not sure what the final size of the medallion is.

it was on sale at create for less but i'm not sure if it is any longer.

Ok, these are similar, but I finally scanned a pic into the computer so you can see what I am talking about. I just have the picture, no pattern, in a book of "antique" quilts.

I have not seen any that large recently....maybe going to a LQS and going through their patterns/books/magazines? Or the library?

I have a Mariner's Compass book that I checked out from the library that gives step by step instructions. The patterns in the book are for up to a 32inch center medallion and are paper pieced. It is called Mariner's Compass Quilts, Setting a New Course written by Judy Mathieson

i've never seen that pattern on the consumer market. it could be an original design by the quilt artist.

you could draft your own pattern based off of this picture. it could be done in EQ and the majority of the pattern could be foundation pieced so you could achieve those sharp points.

it would be very similar to drafting a NY Beauty except on a much larger scale.

moonpi, i didn't mean you made a mistake. i meant that they left a while back and i was disappointed at that time. i only knew because it was a yahoo! group that i was signed in for.

the site you sent us to is very good. how in the world did you find it? is that a regular free pattern website?

i was under the impression that bookmarks changed as sites changed. so they are always up to date. i guess that's not true, but i have had sites go away that weren't valid anymore. or, bom's change each month to bring you up to date. i put this new one in as a 'save as' in finder. i have a mac.
i've never tried that before. we'll see what happens.
