If you always keep some tension on the thread it doesn't get all loose and twist up like that. Make sure the thread comes off the side of the spool or cone and you'll have a whole lot fewer problems with it.

I had this same problem until I taped (painters tape) a safety pin on the back right side of my machine, put the
thread spool in a small glass or cup behind the machine and thread the spool first thru the little circle part of the
pin, then thread thru the machine in the normal way. This worked for me. I can't find the polyester clear thread,
anyone know where to get that online?

I bought mine at a LQS. What I've got is SULKY, 100% polyester, spool of 2200 yards (2000 m.) I paid about $10 at the LQS, but I'm guessing JoAnn's would be a bit cheaper, specially with a coupon.

Note on spool label says to use t 75-90 top stitch needle.

Thanks GrannieAnnie, I'm going to try this! I like that you don't have to worry about it melting when ironing too!

I put my spool of thread on my cone holder also. I had the same problem with the sewing machine holder that was horizontal. As soon as I put it vertical no more problems.
