    Default Looking for warm batting

What batting do you use? I have just started quilting again after a few years off, and have started to machine quilt my tops. I have been using warm and natural, but I'm looking for something thicker and warmer. I don't really live in a super cold climate, but my quilts don't have the heavy warmth that I would like.

    Any suggestions?

Wool batting ( Dream Wool & Hobbs wool ) are both really nice to work with, washable, less shrinkage than cotton, lightweight but lofty. Also, polyester batting ( dream poly is a wonderful choice) is warmer than cotton, holds in the heat. Using flannel for backings also increases warmth.

You can also layer battings. A good combination is a wool batting on top of a cotton batting. You can also layer poly batting over cotton; you just won't get the complete "breathability" of using all natural fibers. Just be careful if you are quilting on a domestic machine; you can make the quilt sandwich too thick to slide easily under your presser foot.

I use two layers of batting for quilts I make for myself, because I like the extra heaviness and warmth - either cotton/cotton or cotton/wool.

I like to use two batting. A cotton layer and another layer , wool when my wallet can handle it, poly when the wallet is thinner.

I used a flannel sheet for the batting and it was super warm and a nice weight without being extremely heavy. Flannel sheets are also inexpensive and available most everywhere.

I think it also has to do with the degree/amount of quilting....I would think that heavily quilted items would not have the same warmth factor....as the insulation factor comes from the amount of trapped "air" as well as the batting.
Don't know if i'm saying what i mean clearly...but think of the warmth of a down comforter....just feathers and air with minimal stitching.

Warm and Natural has a batting called Warm and Plush. It has pretty good reviews on Amazon, where I bought it. I haven't tried it yet. I also like my quilts to be heavy and warm.

I used Warm & Plush on my last quilt. It's much denser and warmer. JoAnns has it in prepackaged sizes.

I can't handle the weight, but do like the warmth. I have used a medium weight fleece, which really adds the warmth. Tinker
