Is there a machine that would work for quilting and embroidery? Both of mine are old and need to be replaced but I have no idea where to start. What would you recommend? I think a site was mentioned recently where some bought their machines online?

I like my baby lock machine . It's pretty tough. I have the ellegante2, but Bernina also comes to mind, and I've quilted and embroidered with with my ellegante. I kNow the 440qe has an embroidery module.

The Janome 11000 is a great machine. I can't remember if the Horizon (7700) does embroidery or not.

I have husqvarna topaz 30 it does both and it is not as expensive as bernina

I have a Janome 11000SE that does both and I luv luv luv it. But before I bought anything I would decide how big you want the hoops to be. I got this because I wanted that 8by8 hoop. But now Janome has a MC12000 that does embroidery and quilting and the hoops are bigger. Be sure and try out these machines and buy at a dealer with free lessons. Bought mine in Morris, Il and whenever I need help with it there is no problem Someone always willing to help me.

My Viking Ruby is great embroidery; easy to learn and use. There are so many features that makes this really great. It's also good for quilting with a 9 1/2 throat. I used the FMQ and even for a beginner I did really good. It has settings so that you can either use the floating foot or the one w/the spring. I've been using my machine for a yr now and have never had to adjust the tension and I've never had a problem with any threads that I've used. It likes them all. I got mine used from my LQS, it only had 7hrs of use on it but I saved alot. There is only one Viking above mine and the only difference in the two is that the other uses at least one hoop larger than mine. I have hoops ranging in size from the standard 4x4 up to 14 X 9(apprx) plus two endless hoops. I could not have gotten a machine with hoops only 4x4 or even the 5x7 I would have been so bored and those are the only two hoops I haven't used. I'd suggest going to a few places and test drive the machines they have and just as important see how the customer support is in that store. CS is so important for your machines and especially for embroidery machines.

I recently purchased a Brother Innovis 1250D for embroidery and quilting. It has built in Disney designs as well as other designs. USB port enables you to transfer designs from a computer into the machine. It embroiders up to a 5x7 design and comes with a multi-positional hoop for larger designs. It has to be purchased at a Brother dealer. I purchased mine for $1699.00.
