I am looking at purchasing a Bernina machine. It is between the 450, 640 and the 730. Cost is a factor but not prohibative necessarily. I want the BSR, 9mm and embroidery functions. Any thoughts?

Go with the 640, it has a better hook than the 400 series.

What is "hook" when you're referring to sewing machines? Thanks.

I may be worng but I believe she is talking about the bobbin hook.

If I had to choose I would get the 730. I like the way thebobbin threads for embroidery better than the way the 440 does.

As many opinions as there are people - I wouldn't have a Bernina if it was given to me - well, maybe I would take it and hope I could unload it on someone! Nothing but bad experience with them here! (440 and new 830)

Well, I have 5 Berninas (vintage 731 and 930, modern 440, 820, and 240) and I can't recommend them highly enough. Power, precision, durability, reliability...My only 9mm Bernina is the 820, and I don't do embroidery, so the only thing I can tell you about those 3 choices is that the 640 is being discontinued, so it should be available at a savings. The 450 requires a computer connection for embroidery, but the 640 and 730 can go off a USB stick. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your Bernina as much as I enjoy mine!
