I want to make a nine-patch block that will finish at 2 inches. What size do I need to cut the blocks? :?: :?

When calculating the piece sizes, start with the finished size you want when the block is sewn into the quilt. Then once you know that, add on the seam allowances

Finished size = 2"

3x3 for a nine patch, each piece needs to be 1/3 of 2" => 2/3"

Add on seam allowances, 1/4" for each side => 2/3" + 1/2"

Which means each of the nine pieces need to be 1-1/6" ... not easily measured!

With it being this small and the math/measurements not easy to do, what about paper piecing the blocks??? Just a thought.

I see others have beat me to the answer...lol...but I'll go ahead and add my math too.
Cut each block 1.17inch.
That would give you the 1/4inch seam allowance on all sides. (0.67inch without seam allowances).
3blocks across @ 0.67inch=2.01inch.
Please post a photo of the item when done!

lol, I had gotten as far as 1 and a 1/6, just having trouble making the leap from that to the increments giving on a ruler.

I would be sewing together strips, then cutting them down into rows of blocks. I'm not making a whole quilt of these, just want four of these blocks for the corners of a larger quilt block!

Paper piecing, hmmm. I just learned how to do that last night. Maybe I should give that an attempt.

If you just want the look you could always just use a little checked fabric. I can't picture what you are making and would love to see a pic.

I would suggest a large glass of wine and a brick of chocolate before starting. it will help you focus. hehe
