I purchased the book "Daddy's Ties" by Shirley Botsford on ebay. I am absolutely enamored by the concept. Has any one used this book in the past. Has anyone made ANYTHING for old mens neckties....pillow, stuffed animals, quilts.....If you have made anything for old mens silk neckties...how did you wash them and/or disenfect them at least..... am currently purchasing from Salvation Army, Goodwill and Ebay, so heavens only knows where they have been.....will appreciate any imput you can share with me.

I seen this book on a fling it all post and it was 70 dollars, I had planned to check into it for a waaaaaaay cheaper price lol. I have been collecting ties to make a quilt with. I did not know either what to do as far as laundering them so for now they are in zip lock bags with dryer sheets in with them till I figure it out. I used to stop in the good will every so often and get them for a quarter 2 weeks ago I went in and they were 3.99 each! Needless to say It will take me a while longer to accumulate them now lol.

Bought the book for less than $10.00 delivered on Ebay. Had to wait and search for about 4 months till I found a good deal.....At my local Salvation Army Store, mens ties are $3.00 each, but the 1st and 3rd Friday is 50% off.....Am also buying on 'Lots of Ties' on ebay, won a bid this morning 6 silk ties for $9 delivered....Going to local Goodwill store on Monday. My limit is $2.00 a tie......

I made a tote bag from Mens ties. I opened them all up, took lining out of them, then washed them. tote turned out pretty nice.

I've been collected ties from the family for yesars. I take them apart, place them in a lingerie laundry bag and wash. I figure if they're going into a quit they need to be durable. If they fall apart, at least they won't make it into my quilt.

I have a wealth of men's neckties! DSIL left me some of her old quilting stuff. When I opened the bag they were in I just about fell over from the odor! Yuk! In desperation I threw them in the washer on a gentle cycle. They came out a lot cleaner (did loose a few) but the moth ball odor didn't go away. After doing some research I found out that hanging them outdoors in the sun will help. (And it did!) I now have clean odor free ties...who knows what I'll do with 100 ties! LOL

Yes I have used this book and love it. I wash all my ties and take them apart,press and hang them on a mens pant hanger until my next project.I made the quilt on page 80.I receive orders for memorial quilts and the first thing I ask for are the ties :shock: I always incorporate them into the quilt.

if you want to get rid of them to allow space for more fabric, let me know....I will even go so far as 'buy' them from you. :lol:

If you search this site and google "neck tie quilt" and anything related to that you will find alot of information.

I have about 3 tubs that I have collected. I have washed them all and dried them..very few fell apart..those that did I trashed.

I have taken them apart, thrown away the inside and then stored them. They take about a third less space this way and I am not going to use the innards anyway.

I am also saving the labels...some of them are so neat. Don't know what I'll do with them but just can't part with them.
